Crufts 2023 entries are now open. Podengo Day (by far the most important part of the Terrier & Hound day!) is Saturday, 11th March 2023. We'll be in Hall 5, ring 35. Entries can be made online through Fosse Data, closing date 23 January 2023, or by post using the entry form, closing date 9 January 2023. See the Shows / Crufts page for details, links and a copy of the entry form.
We held our biennial Breed Appreciation Day and you can see a report and pictures on the event page. Many thanks to the judges and exhibitors who attended as well as to all those involved in the organising and running of this key event in our calendar.
The annual Discover Dogs exhibition was held at ExCeL London on 15 - 16 October and the NPPA were there to represent the breed. There's more information and pictures on the dedicated event page.
Meantime, though, thanks to Jenny Wedge for the admin and behind-the-scenes work and many thanks to the volunteers who erected, dismantled and staffed the stand: Sarah Sands, Tony Hall, Diana Curtis and Ann Foscoe + of course a number of our 4-legged friends!
We are very, very sad to confirm that our good friend and Association member Jenny Folds died at the weekend. Known to many of us as an exhibitor and fan of the breed, Jenny was also an active part of the podengo community, not only attending events but also helping to run them. Even though she had been ill for a while, she was still keen to come to shows to see her many friends, human and canine. The podengo world has lost a great friend and, more importantly, the world has lost a simply lovely lady. Our thoughts are with her family and friends. Rest in peace, Jenny.

We received over 400 photos for consideration for the 2023 calendar - many thanks to everyone who entered. We're going through them now and will announce more details about how you can get a copy of the calendar in due course. It's going to be a tough call because the standard is very, very high and there simply isn't room for them all.
Photos we aren't able to use in the calendar will be fed into our Instagram feed so keep an eye on that, too.
Huge congratulations to the NPPA's Vice President Miguel Sabino, whose Império de Viamonte took Best of Breed at the World Dog Show in Madrid. Império gets to add WW22 to his name: well done! Miguel and Império are pictured here with the judge.

Click on the drop-down box to search for Podenco Portugues and remember that outside the UK, Portuguese Podengos are judged in 6 distinct categories: by size (Grande, Mediano and Pequeno) and also by coat - wire (pelo largo y duro) and smooth (pelo liso y corto).
We're roughly halfway through the year and here are the current (11 June) standings in the annual Our Dogs Top Dogs competition:
Top Breeder: Plushcourt - Betty Judge
Top Dog: Morialta Ferreira - Simon and Anna Sampson & Margaret Brooks
Top Puppy: Brundledean Giovana - Sue Brundle
Top Stud Dog: Brundledean Bandoleiro - Sue Brundle and Margaret Brooks
Top Brood Bitch: Odisseia De Viamonte At Morialta - Simon and Anna Sampson
There's still a lot of shows to come so this could all change between now and the end of the year but well done everyone ... thus far!
A little bit of Portugal came to the picturesque village of Yelvertoft on the 14th May as the 10th Anniversary NPPA Open Show went ahead on a glorious early summer day. Many congratulations to Nigel Crockford and Deborah Crockford whose Plushcourt Gloriana at Belfalas (Lily) took Best in Show, Best Smooth in Show and Best Puppy in Show. Congratulations, too, to Jenny Wedge whose Stormwitch Macadamia at Rioccajen (Mac) took Reserve Best in Show, Best Opposite Sex and Best Wire in Show. You'll find results and pictures on the event page.
Congratulations to Betty Judge, whose Plushcourt Guessing took Best Bitch and then pipped the Best Dog, Simon Sampson and Anna Sampson's Morialta Ferreira, to Best of Breed at Crufts 2022.
Susan Brundle took Best Puppy with Brundledean Giovana and that little girl looks set for a long and succesful career in the ring.
At the other end of the scale, Diana Curtis's Stormwitch Carrousel Tulpe ('Tink') completed a remarkable hat trick: having been Best Puppy (2015) and Best of Breed (2019) she has now added Best Veteran to her list of achievments.
A shout out to the judge Ms. Persson, too, for her excellent handling and rapport with the dogs ... as well as with the exhibitors! And well done to everyone who took part. Full results are on Fosse Data:

As many of you will know, Our Dogs newspaper runs an annual award for the top performing show dogs during a calendar year. Points are awarded for wins at shows during the year, they're added up at the end and then the most successful dogs of the year are announced. There are also awards for the top stud dog and brood bitch, i.e. the dogs whose offspring have been the most successful in the ring. The 2021 results have been announced and the Portuguese Podengo winners are:
Top Breeder: Morialta - Simon and Anna Sampson
Top Dog: Morialta Ferreira - Simon and Anna Sampson & Margaret Brooks
Top Puppy: Plushcourt Guessing - Betty Judge
Top Stud Dog: Brundledean Bandoleiro - Sue Brundle and Margaret Brooks
Top Brood Bitch: Odisseia De Viamonte At Morialta - Simon and Anna Sampson
Congratulations to all the winners but especially to NPPA stalwarts Simon, Anna and Sue.
Welcome to 2022!
