Portuguese Podengo Association
HEALTH
The
Northern Portuguese Podengo Association is completely committed to ensuring the present and future health of the Portuguese
Podengo. All members of the committee sent DNA samples to the USA for original analysis. However, they are
now working closely with geneticists and researchers within the Medical Research Faculty at Manchester University to
develop an effective health monitoring and screening strategy the aim of which is to help inform enthusiasts of the breed
and assist breeders in planning genetically sound breeding programmes. The NPPA, the Kennel Club and the University greatly encourages member’s participation
in their collaborative aim to ensuring the breed remains healthy and ‘fit for function’ by completing a ‘Health
Watch Questionnaire’. The responses are returned directly to the University where the data collected is analysed confidentially
and an Annual Summary Report will be produced providing an overview of the current health status of our breed in the UK. It
is anticipated that returning the questionnaires direct to the geneticist will
generate a greater response rate.
Northern Portuguese Podengo Association
Annual Health Watch Dear Podengo enthusiast We ask if you would kindly take a few moments to complete the questionnaire
below. By completing a health questionnaire on an annual
basis, you would be making an important and significant contribution to the future health of our breed. The information collected
will be treated with the strictest confidence by an independent researcher at Manchester University and will be used to help
monitor the health of the Portuguese Podengo in the UK. Analysis of data such as this on an annual basis will allow the Association
to provide anonymous feedback both to the Podengo community and the Kennel Club on the current health status of the breed
and facilitate early intervention to address any emerging health issues. We encourage you
to complete the questionnaire even if your dog is healthy, as this provides equally valuable information. Please complete
one questionnaire for each of your dogs (If you need additional forms, please contact the secretary or photocopy original).

Health Watch The Portuguese
Podengo is generally known to be a robust and healthy breed. As with any
dogs, and like humans too, sometimes they may suffer from ill health, and as they are relatively new to the UK, we are literally
starting from scratch. It is therefore very important that
we record any information regarding any health issues. The Northern
Portuguese Podengo Association (NPPA) has set up a Health Watch Co-Ordinator to monitor the wellbeing of the breed by collecting
and storing information on any diagnosed cases of disease (along with relevant reports if possible) that may occur throughout
the full life of Podengos. This is the only way to try to ensure a healthy
future for our wonderful breed. We would like to take this opportunity
to ask all owners to report any health issues to our data collection Co-Ordinator via the Association's Health Watch Co-ordinator.
All information given will be treated in the strictest confidence by an independent Health Data Co-Ordinator. Please let the Health Watch Co-Ordinator and your breeder know of any health issues as it may assist in future
breeding plans and is imperative for the future health of the breed. It is essential
to send a yearly report to the Health Watch even if your dog is bouncing with health. That way we can get a bigger picture
of the health of the Breed. Advice is always at hand from the NPPA’s
two Health & Welfare Co-Ordinators, Mrs Sue Dunning (for the Southern part of the country) and Mrs. Susan Pearson (for
the Northern part of the country), via the Webmaster, and, as mentioned before, everything will be in the strictest of
confidence. The Health Watch has been set up in line with the Kennel Club’s
Fit for Function Health Policy. We have two alternative ways to
respond - by post or via this Website www.nppa.org.uk.
